NATIONAL LITERACY WEEK

The school celebrated National Literacy and Numeracy Week in a variety of ways.

Each morning on assembly, students from the Year 12 English classes read a poem by Wilfred Owen to the school body and gave us a background to why he wrote that poem, and his attitude to war.

We had a “Where were you reading?” photographic competition.  There were three categories: photograph that promotes the local area won by Melanie Mills for her photo in Binnaway, with Dominic Stafford runner up for his photo using a reflection of the Warrumbungles in the Visitors Centre as his backdrop; photo taken furthest from Coonabarabran won by Serena Fiegert reading somewhere in South Australia, with Hughie Ryan at Luna Park runner up; and photo reading in the most unusual place won by Alex Baglee on his motorbike, with Isabel Enks reading with chooks as the runner up.  Due to the variety of entrants, we made two extra categories.  The best computer altered photo went to Jack Devenish reading with a shark on the crest of a wave and runner up was Edward Wilkin reading upside down on a rollercoaster; best series was won by Leda Greenwood, with Nerida Hannah runner up.  Commiserations to Mr Morrissey who searched extensively for Wally and actually found him on his recent visit to Government House.

On Wednesday, students and staff dressed as their favourite book character.  We had Wally, Van Helsing, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, The Saucepan Man (woman) , Sister Mary (one of the few who were chosen), Mr Smith from the Matrix, an African Explorer, Elizabeth Bennett, Alex Rider, Old Macdonald, Aladdin and Jasmine, Woody, Indiana Jones and Arthur Dent from the Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy as well as many others. The winner from Years 7 to 9 was Little Red Riding Hood (Sarah Waldron) and from Years 10 to 12 was The Hulk (Daniel Thomas).  Well done everyone.
