Single Cup
The annual contest for the Single Cup was held in Coonamble last Wednesday 8th August. Single Cup is a multi sport competition between Gilgandra, Coonamble and Coonabarabran High Schools and has been an important part of our sporting calendar since 1971. This years competition was as keenly contested as any in all those years with the schools playing each other in Open and 15 years Netball, Open and 15 years Rugby League, Open Soccer, Open Hockey, Tennis, Golf and Lawn Bowls.
Each school accumulates 4 points for a win, 2 points for a draw and 1 point for a loss. With school pride on the line, all games are fiercely contested however, sportsmanship and comradery between the teams remain a feature. After last years victory by Coonabarabran, Gil and Coonamble were determined to “knock us of our perch” which meant that Coona had to fight extra hard throughout the day to secure any wins. To make things even more difficult a number of our teams were severely affected by the flu.
Despite the obstacles put before us the Coona team prevailed amassing 56 points over the course of the day to record a victory over Gil on 51 and Coonamble on 26. So, for the second year in a row and the 13th time overall our captains were able to hold the Single Cup aloft to signify our position as the best sporting school on the Castlereagh.
Next years contest will be held in Gilgandra and this is a significant year as it is the 40th year that the three schools have competed for the Single Cup. A change in format next year is also likely, however, there is nothing that will prevent us from pulling out all stops to complete a hat trick of victories in this prestigious competition.
