SENIOR MUSIC GALA

Our Music students from Years 11 and 12 entertained us on Monday 29th June with a selection of pieces they have been working on in class.  The audience enjoyed the large range of items presented and went away impressed by the talent and the ability of our students.  The items from the program included vocal performances.  Jessica Staniforth demonstrated her lovely tonal quality singing My Immortal, Sarah and Alyssa Martin sang in harmony beautifully for Never Alone and The Real Me.  Rhiannon Bowden sang a lovely piece Hallelujah, and then showed her versatility by joining Jessica in a song Can You Feel the Love Tonight and also playing an emotive piano piece The Music of the Night.  Harry played the electric guitar and sang for About A Girl and Everlong, while Annie played the acoustic / electric guitar while singing Blackbird by The Beatles and her own composition On Top of the Hill.

The pieces ranged from Popular Song style to Jazz to Twentieth Century Art Music.  Alice Riley impressed the audience with her performance of the Miriam Hyde Sonata for Flute and Piano, while Alexander Lee gave a virtuoso performance on the alto saxophone with pieces such as Pequena, East Coast Mainline, and Valse Vanite.  Annie McKinnon received a roar of approval from the audience as she completed her rendition of John Butler’s Ocean.  Our two flautists Alice Riley and Bethanie Hain gave individual interpretations of Debussy’s Syrinx, and Bethanie also gave a lovely rendition of Pastorale d’ete.  The Gala drew to a close with our Rock Band playing the pieces to be performed at The Battle of the Bands.  The band members are Annie McKinnon (vocals, guitar), Alexander Lee (keyboard, bass guitar) and Rowan McKinnon (drum kit).

The Night had a lovely atmosphere, and each of the performers left with a great smile on their face.  The comments received from the audience members were very positive and our senior students now look forward to their concerts in Term 3.
