Athletics Carnival
The weather may have been cold and bleak, however, the school spirit, participation and competition were decidedly hot at last week’s athletics carnival. For the first time the Houses were competing for the Chris Jackson trophy which has been created to recognise the athletic achievements of this former student who still holds Combined High Schools records. Nandi were the overall winners on the day amassing a very impressive 1095 points. They were followed by Mopra on 968, Tibuc on 955 and Timor on 850.
The individual age champions were: 12 years: Caleb Broeksema and Phoebe Hensby, 13 years: Nathan Verrender and Emma Kable, 14 years: Jacob King and Teagan Cain, 15 years: Brad Kable and Katie Lee, 16 years: Jake McDonald/Daniel Oakes and Elise Baker, Senior: Bobby Stewart/Aaron Percival and Hannah Johnston.
Over 70 students entered our feature event “The Tom Sullivan Gift” with the finalists being decided after 5 elimination rounds. Jim Nash from Year 7 flashed home to run down front markers Vanessa Kenyon and Ruby Bowsema. It’s interesting to note that Jim’s mother, Kellie, had made it through to the semi finals as staff are also encouraged to compete in this handicap event. Jim collected $70 in prize money for his win as part of a sponsorship pool which is donated each year by Flood’s Bakery and Jack and Kathy Sullivan. The school thanks them for their ongoing support.
The only record to be broken on the day was the 13 years boys javelin with Ricky Fowke bettering Daniel Nies old mark throwing 30.85 metres.
