Full circle    John Maclean is an extraordinary man whose life has come full circle. After winning silver in rowing at the Beijing Paralympics, the last of many incredible sporting quests that have seen him swim the English channel and finish the Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon, he realised he needed to confront his past and the road accident that had left him paraplegic at the age of 22 if he was to move beyond the physical challenges that had defined his life since. In his remarkable second book, which follows his bestselling sports biography  Sucking the Marrow Out of Life, there are lessons for us all: persistence, balance, humility, the value of community and friends, and, ultimately, self-belief.

Let me tell you something about that night   Be warned. Mothers should not read these stories to their children, even though they might contain a lonely elf, a talking moon, a butterfly that wants to be a rabbit, or a boy who was born with a flower as an unfortunate appendage. Hovering within the realm of fables, myths and fairy tales, here are unlikely bedtime stories that are best read on a dark, stormy night, and at the risk of wounding the soul. The haunting first collection of fiction from award-winning poet Cyril Wong.  Beautifully illustrated by Sydney based artist Jason Wing.

Seventh time lucky    Harry Giesen’s WW II memoir is a compelling, colourful and lively account of his many escapes, captures and on-leave escapades in Europe between 1940 and 1945. His thoroughly engaging story involves universal themes of love, mateship, larrikinism and endurance while at the same time highlighting the futility and misery of war. From the moment he enlists in the 2nd AIF at the age of 19, to his sad and highly emotionally-charged homecoming to Sydney, Harry commands his readers accompany him on this intensely personal journey. This wonderfully written tale, told with candour, sincerity and humour, is a must-have — not just for war-story readers — but for lovers of action, adventure and romance.

Blue noise  Ash is drooling over his favourite guitar - the one he can't afford - when he meets Charlie Novak. One jam session later and Charlie convinces Ash to play in his band. But it'll never work. Bands never do.
Erin is wandering down a corridor at school - overthinking things as usual - when she runs into Charlie. Literally. The guy is a fruit loop with his weird hair and hyperactive rantings. When Charlie invites her to be the band's keyboard player, Erin can't get a word in to say no. She's a classical pianist. It'll never work.
But maybe this time things will be different. Maybe blues music is just what Ash and Erin need.

The mystery of the song dynasty painting  Is she dreaming, or has Chinese Cinderella lived a previous life? Following a fall at the river town of Feng Jie, Chinese Cinderella is whisked away to hospital. There she sees a copy of an ancient painting, 'Along the River at Qing Ming'.
As she lapses in and out of consciousness, she is haunted by vivid dreams that seem strange, yet somehow familiar. A tale emerges, of friendship, wealth and poverty, eunuchs and an Emperor who loved art, as Chinese Cinderella recalls a life lived eight hundred years ago during the Song Dynasty.
But is it real, or all in her imagination...

The Crossing  The Crossing is the first book in a stunning new trilogy that follows the fate of Maryam and her unlikely companions - Joseph, Ruth and Lazarus. This is fast, suspenseful drama underpinned by a powerful and moving story about love and loss. The people of Onewere, a small island in the Pacific, know that they are special - chosen to survive the deadly event that consumed the Earth. Now, from the rotting cruise ship Star of the Sea, the elite control the population - manipulating old texts to set themselves up as living 'gods'. But what the people of Onewere don't know is this: the leaders will stop at nothing to meet their own blood-thirsty needs. When Maryam crosses from child to woman, she must leave everything she has ever known and make a crossing of another kind. But life inside the ship is not as she had dreamed, and she is faced with the unthinkable: obey the leaders and very likely die, or turn her back on every belief she once held dear.

Kampung boy. . With masterful economy worthy of Charles Schultz, Lat recounts the life of Mat, a Muslim boy growing up in rural Malaysia in the 1950s: his adventures and mischief-making, fishing trips, religious education, and work on his family's rubber plantation. Meanwhile, the traditional way of life in his village (or kampung) is steadily disappearing, with tin mines and factory jobs increasingly overtaking the village's agricultural way of life. When Mat himself leaves for boarding school, he can only hope that his familiar kampung will still be there when he returns. The first in a delightful series, Kampung Boy is hilarious and affectionate, with brilliant, super-expressive artwork that opens a window into a world that has now nearly vanished.

Swerve  One of the country's finest young cellists, 16 year-old Hugh Twycross has a very bright future. A future that has been mapped out by his parents, his teachers, by everybody, it seems, except Hugh Twycross. Hugh has a secret, though: he loves cars and he loves car racing. When his newly discovered grandfather, Poppy, asks him to go on a road trip to Uluru in his 1970 Holden HT Monaro, Hugh decides, for once in his life, to do the unexpected. As they embark on a journey into the vast and fierce landscape of the Australian interior, Hugh discovers that Poppy has a secret that will unravel both their lives and take them in a direction they never expected.

The poison throne  Wynter returns from a five-year exile in the bleak Northlands to find her beloved homeland in turmoil. King Jonathan's civilised, multicultural realm is no more; the gibbets and cages have returned. Days of laughter, friendly ghosts and gossipy cats remain only in Wynter's memory - the present confronts her with power play, dark torture chambers, violent ghosts, and cats (those still alive) too scared to talk to humans. The Inquisition is a real and present danger.
Set in a fantastical medieval Europe, this is the first book in a compelling trilogy of court intrigue, adventure and romance. It draws the reader in from the very first sentence and doesn't loosen its grip until the last.

A feast for crows is the long anticipated fourth volume in George R.R. Martin's epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire, which depicts the struggle for control of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros.  The Seven Kingdoms' most powerful "houses" battle each other for domination, largely ignoring the potential threats of supernatural beings from the north and dragons from across the sea.  A Song of Ice and Fire is a continuous narrative, and the individual books do not stand alone, so readers new to the series should begin with the first volume, A Game of Thrones, rather than jumping right into A Feast for Crows.

Pink  A fresh and lively ride on the chaotic rollercoaster of love, friendship, musical theatre and the back stage crew, from one of the brightest voices in YA fiction. ‘The pink jumper was practically glowing in my grey bedroom. Stripping the black dye from her hair, she heads off to the Billy Hughes School for Academic Excellence, leaving her uber-cool girlfriend Chloe behind. Ava is quickly taken under the wing of perky, popular Alexis who insists that: a) she's a perfect match for handsome Ethan; and b) she absolutely must audition for the school musical. TORN PAGES  There's something about a storm in the middle of the night that gathers a family close. It's as if nothing else exists outside that huddle of love in a blacked-out room which, try as it might, the storm cannot overwhelm.  The storm that Liddy faces is the storm of AIDS, that is attacking their small African community. It has taken away from her for ever her mother and father. With her brother, Joe, Liddy must try to bring up Kesi, their little sister. There is never enough to eat, they cannot afford to go to school, and even their grandmother goes out her way to make life difficult for them. Someone important will want to adopt Peter. They do. Professor Kaltenbach is very pleased to welcome such a fine Aryan specimen to his household. People will be envious. But Peter is not quite the specimen they think. He is forming his own ideas about what he is seeing, what he is told. FROMELLES    Fromelles tells the story of the painstaking detective work of a group of Australian amateur historians that led to the discovery of the location of the largest mass war grave site since the Second World War. It follows the story of the battle and why the historians believed the site was missed. It also takes us to the first inconclusive exploration of the site by archaeologists in 2007.

Except in Furnace, death is the least of his worries. Soon Alex discovers that the prison is a place of pure evil, where inhuman creatures in gas masks stalk the corridors at night, where giants in black suits drag screaming inmates into the shadows, where deformed beasts can be heard howling from the blood-drenched tunnels below.

RAPUNZEL’S REVENGE  Once upon a time, in a land you only think you know, lived a little girl and her mother . . . or the woman she thought was her mother.  Every day, when the little girl played in her pretty garden, she grew more curious about what lay on the other side of the garden wall . . . a rather enormous garden wall. And every year, as she grew older, things seemed weirder and weirder, until the day she finally climbed to the top of the wall and looked over into the mines and desert beyond.  Newbery Honor-winning author Shannon Hale teams up with husband Dean Hale and brilliant artist Nathan Hale (no relation) to bring readers a swashbuckling and hilarious twist on the classic story as you’ve never seen it before.

MY MOTHER’S EYES   A fifteen-year-old Australian farm boy lies about his age to enlist in war and is caught up in the horrors of World War I in Egypt and on the Western Front, where 5,500 Australian troops were lost in two days at Fromelles alone. This boy's story in this unique, stirring picture book is based on true stories of the twenty-three teenage soldiers, one only fourteen who fought with the Australian army in World War I, as recorded at the Australian War Memorial (their names among a list of 60,000 Australian soldiers killed in that war). The author's grandfather was a boy soldier who, unlike the hero of the book, did survive to return home. Told in the boy's own simple language and with extracts from his letters home, the story is extremely moving and evocative of the real tragedy of that worst of all wars.

THE GATES OF ROME In the glorious and decadent city of Rome, Gaius and Marcus--one the privileged son of a senator and the other, a cunning bastard--grow up as friends and students of a powerful gladiator, forced to walk different paths as the empire plunges toward civil war and the two men are thrust into the middle of a bitter conflict that will put their friendship to the ultimate test. Now, as Caesar exacts his revenge and builds a legend far from Rome, his friend Marcus Brutus is fighting battles of another sort, rising to power in the wake of the assassination of a dictator. Once Brutus and Caesar were as close as brothers, devoted to the same ideals and attracted to the same forbidden women. Now they will be united again by a shock wave from the north, where a gladiator named Spartacus is building an army of seventy thousand slaves—to fight a cataclysmic battle against Rome itself.
THE GODS OF WAR This is the fourth and final volume in the acclaimed “Emperor” series, in which Conn Iggulden brilliantly interweaves history and adventure to recreate the astonishing life of Julius Caesar. For across the Empire - in Spain, Africa, Greece, across Asia Minor - there are legions loyal to Pompey. How will Caesar prevail? And at what cost?
